This Veterans Day, It’s All About Teamwork

Reebok and the Navy SEAL Foundation are joining forces for a 24-hour fitness event honoring fallen members of the Naval Special Warfare community and raising funds for veterans, active duty service members, and their families. All you have to do is work out—and it’s never meant so much.

Normally when you step into the box for your workout, it's all about you —you’re hunting for a PR, pushing yourself at RX weight, and going full throttle towards a WOD you can feel good about. But starting on Veterans Day on November 11th—and for the rest of the month—it’s all about TEAMWORK.

Reebok and the Navy SEAL Foundation have partnered for the TEAMWORK functional fitness event, a series of 24 workouts over the course of 24 hours, with each workout being completed by teams of 2-4 people. The 24-hour event can be completed any time from Veterans Day on November 11th to November 30th. The key detail that separates it from other events? It’s not a competition—the goal is to tackle a challenge as a team, in support of a larger team. According to Chris Irwin, the Director of Partnerships for the Navy SEAL Foundation, the intent is to rally one community to support another community: Naval Special Warfare. ”Veterans Day is about honoring those who have served the country,” says Irwin. “At the Navy SEAL Foundation, we have programmatic support which does exactly that and more. We really want to bring people together to frame and celebrate the holiday in the right way, so we can help those in need.”

In support of the event and partnership, Reebok has released a TEAMWORK edition of the Nano 9, featuring subtle design details representative of the Navy SEAL Foundation. The goal, Irwin says, was to make the shoes as unassuming and selfless as the men and women who fight for our freedom and protect our nation. “We really wanted to make the whole design subtle,” says Irwin. “There’s a subdued camouflage pattern on the heel, the Navy SEAL Foundation crest on the tongue, and a very small ‘TEAMWORK’ on the back.”

The most special detail, though, is the one that’s the most private: as you slip your foot into the shoe, you can see that it says ‘Proud Supporter Navy SEAL Foundation” on the insole. “It’s a reminder of what the shoe is about, but it’s not advertised to the world, and I think that’s the right mindset,” says Irwin. That support is through solidarity and action: for every shoe sold, Reebok is donating 10% of the purchase price to the Navy SEAL Foundation. “If you’re walking around on the street, no one would know what this shoe is about, but by purchasing a pair you’re supporting the Foundation.” Reebok is also donating funds from the sales of the TEAMWORK tee shirt.

The partnership, according to Reebok Senior Vice President and General Manager Chris Froio, was a no-brainer. “We have the ability to raise awareness for what the Navy SEAL Foundation is trying to do,” says Froio. “We feel strongly that we can benefit those most affected in pursuit of our freedom.”
