What Motivates You? We Cracked the Code!

You just got home from a long day of work, you’re tired, and you have an hour to workout before dinner. You pull out your sneakers, but do you pack your yoga mat or boxing gloves?

From getting stronger to finding peace of mind, we all work out for different reasons.  Reebok has taken a look at what drives us to get fit, how exercising makes us feel and how that changes depending on the activity. 

With data collected from consumer surveys, we divided the reasons for exercising into three main categories: decompression, improvement and empowerment.  

If you’re looking to relax, relieve stress, or clear your mind, decompression is the goal, so head outside for a walk or hike.

Running outranks every other category if improvement is the goal, so hit the pavement if you’re looking to get stronger, build stamina or improve performance. 

If you’re striving to look your best, build confidence and feel in control, you have a lot of options.  Most people find empowerment in yoga and pilates, training and dance and aerobics. 

The Reebok delta represents the physical, mental and social benefits of fitness, and Twitter users agree.  In a poll asking Reebok followers to indicate their primary reason for exercise, 57 percent cited the physical effects while 43 percent favored the mental aspect. 

Several Twitter responders also incorporated all three aspects of the delta when explaining their own fitness motivations. 

Most survey respondents report building muscle as their primary reason for training, while people who run usually do so to train for a specific event.

Unsurprisingly, most people practice yoga to improve flexibility.

Some activities are more group-focused, as the defining characteristic for dance and aerobics is a desire to engage in a community activity. 

Others are predominantly utilitarian. Walking is viewed less as exercise in and of itself and more as a means of transportation.  On the flip side, some motivations stem from more whimsical desires: hiking offers the opportunity to explore, for example.

Whatever your motivation to exercise, there is no denying that pursuing physical fitness pushes us to Be More Human.
