Lil Baby Talks How He’s Using His Success to Help His Community

Rapper Lil Baby is as authentic as they come. At just 23 years old, he is unapologetically himself, speaking his truth in his lyrics and showing the music industry that success looks different for different people.

Lil Baby only just entered the rap scene in the last year or so. While his first few songs surely made noise in the rap community, his debut album this past May solidified him as an artist to watch.

He’s collaborated on mixtapes and singles and studied under some of the hottest rappers in the game right now. Lil Baby has made all the right connections and earned the respect of those who came before him, enabling him to rise to the top.

As his music continues to climb the charts, Lil Baby’s journey has been anything but conventional. As part of Reebok Classic’s Alter The Icons campaign, Lil Baby is showing how he’s defied the norm of what people think it takes to achieve success. While success has come early in his career, he’s already made a statement and continues to push boundaries by experimenting with his sound.

His inspiration comes from the streets of his hometown of Atlanta. The city has become his muse and he’s made it his mission to give back to the community.

“Being from the hood gets glorified, like ‘I’m from the hood’ but it’s not an option. It just is what it is,” he says. “But instead of glorifying it, I’m trying to help and I’m going to try to make sure I put on the best facade I can, if it has to be a facade or whatever, to teach them to do the right thing.”

Being a role model is important to Lil Baby. After having had a tough upbringing and then getting into some trouble in his late teens and early twenties, he uses music to express himself, and as a platform to speak to a younger generation.

“I try to help them already as much as I can,” he says. “But by me doing this with Reebok and them giving me the opportunity to help better them, it’s like the most perfect thing ever.”
